BUZZ LIGHTYEAR

Buzz Lightyear is a fictional character appearing in the CGI animated films Toy Story and its sequels Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, as well as the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie and TV Show.

In the theatrical films, the featured Buzz is a toy - a spaceman action figure - whereas the television properties follow the adventures of the fictional Space Ranger on whom the toy is modelled.

Toy Story

We first see Buzz as a birthday gift for the boy Andy. At this time, Buzz does not realize that he is a toy, believing himself to be the real Buzz Lightyear. He also thinks that all of his equipment is fully functional, not realizing that his communicator is a sticker, his laser is a LED, etc. This belief causes friction between Buzz and Woody, Andy's previous favorite toy. The other toys in Andy's room are attracted by Buzz's doo-dads and gung-ho attitude, but Woody becomes increasingly jealous and contrives to cause Buzz to fall behind Andy's desk. Instead, Buzz falls out of the window and is thought to be lost. Eventually Buzz and Woody meet up and through a series of incidents, Buzz comes first to realize that he is, in fact, a toy and then to accept the situation. He teams up with Woody to defeat a toy-destroying child and together they are able to re-unite with Andy and the other toys.

Toy Story 2

After some time has passed, Woody is stolen by a toy dealer and Buzz leads a group of toys on a quest to rescue him. During the course of investigating the dealer's store (Al's Toy Barn), Buzz comes upon the "Buzz Lightyear" aisle and notices that the current figures come with a utility belt that he lacks. While attempting to remove a belt from a display model, the model comes to life, believing itself to be the real Buzz Lightyear, just as Buzz himself previously believed.

After contraining Buzz inside a display box, this other Buzz finds himself continuing the rescue mission with the other toys, believing it to be a mission against Emperor Zurg, the villain from the TV show. This Buzz eventually squares off against a toy Zurg, who proclaims himself to be Buzz's father in a scene reminiscent of the famous revelation scene in The Empire Strikes Back. When last seen, the second Buzz toy was playing catch with the Zurg toy.

Meanwhile, the primary Buzz escapes and makes his way to join the other toys, finally meeting them in the toy collector's home, where Woody has decided to join with the other members of Woody's Roundup (Jessie, Stinky Pete and Bullseye) and go to a Japanese toy museum. Buzz attempts to convince Woody to come home to Andy's room, but at first Woody is unwilling to go. Eventually, however, he changes his mind and attempts to return, only to be stopped by the villainous Stinky Pete and packed up for shipping. After much difficulty, Buzz and the toys are able to rescue Woody, Jessie and Bullseye, returning at last to Andy's room.

Buzz is last seen striking up a relationship with the excitable cowgirl Jessie.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command

(See also Buzz Lightyear of Star Command)

The straight-to-video movie Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and the following cartoon series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (which also functions as a show within a show in the Toy Story universe), Buzz Lightyear is a human, science fiction hero, a Space Ranger of Star Command. His mission is to protect the universe from the Evil Emperor Zurg. His catchphrases are "I'm Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger, Universe Protection Unit." and "To infinity, and beyond!".

Naturally enough, Buzz's personality in the television show is very similar to that displayed by the Buzz Lightyear toy in the beinning of Toy Story. He shows great courage, but also displays bull-headedness and (especially in the movie) a habit of going it alone, rather than utilizing help. After the apparent loss of his crime-fighting partner Warp Darkmatter, Buzz has sworn never to have another partner. Once he realizes that Warp is not dead, but instead has started working for Zurg under the name 'Agent Z', he forms "Team Lightyear", a group of Rangers directly under his command.

He has a congenial relationship with his team, but is often exacerbated by their shortcomings. He serves as a mentor to the alien Booster and may harbor romantic interests in Princess Mira Nova.

At one point (in a reference to the similar scene in Toy Story 2), Emperor Zurg makes the assertion that he is Buzz's father in order to gain advantage in a fight. He later recants this statement, however, leaving the question unresolved as far as the TV series is concerned.
